5 Best Ski Resorts Near Orange County

It is the season to start getting all your snowboarding and ski gear ready to go. It is truly a fun time in Southern California. Southern California has some of the most beautiful snowcapped mountains that have perfect slopes for beginner skiers/snowboarders or advanced skiers/snowboarders. Here is my list of the best ski resorts near Orange County.

Bear Mountain

Bear mountain resort is the home of the Superpipe and houses the highest lift-served peaks and only half pipes in Southern California. Bear Mountain resort is great for freestyle skiers and snowboarders. It does not have a lot of steep terrains, but the whole mountain is a terrain park. Bear Mountain feels like more of a snowboarding resort. It is not great for downhill skiers, families, or beginners.

The lift pass can cover you at the nearby Snow Summit Mountain Resort. You can stay in Big Bear City or Big Bear lake. There is plenty of lodging and restaurants around those areas.

Drive Time: 2 hours from Orange County

Ski Season: December 1, 2022- April 16, 2023

Snow Summit

Snow Summit Mountain Resort is located in the San Bernardino Mountains. The resort is best for skiing. It has a dedicated beginner’s area (I am not going to lie to you I was riding the slopes in that area the whole day). It is a great family park and a great place to learn skiing and snowboarding. Snow Summit snowmaking operation allows the trails to stay open all night and season-long. The night skiing and snowboarding are pretty fun. The restaurants in Snow Summit are pretty great.

Drive Time: 2 Hours from Orange County

Ski Season: December 2, 2022- April 16, 2023

Mammoth Mountain

Mammoth Mountain is a great resort near Orange County. It has one of the biggest ski areas in Southern California and California. It also has the longest season in North America. It is great for skiers and snowboarders of all levels. There is an abundant amount of snow and other winter sports to enjoy if your family does not like skiing and snowboarding. Mammoth Mountain has tubing, snowmobiling, gondola rides, snowcat tours, and cross-country skiing.

You can also take advantage of the amazing Mammoth Lakes. There is plenty of options for lodging and restaurants around the mountain.

Drive Time: 5 1/2 hours from Orange County

Ski Season: November 11, 2022- May 29, 2023

Mountain High

Mountain High is a great mountain with mountain terrain of varying difficulty. It has challenging terrain for advanced skiers and terrain parks for intermediate and beginner skiers. Mountain High has three resorts. The East resort and the West resort have the most challenging and longest terrain to ski. The North resort is a great place for families, beginners, and adult beginners. The only downside to Mountain High is its changing conditions with snowmaking. The resort has a hard time making snow and does have extensive snowmaking operations like Snow Summit. Advance Skiers may miss having steep chutes and trails.

It also has tubing and sledding for the little ones at the Yeti Snow Park.

Ski Season: December 3, 2022- April 16, 2023

Snow Valley

Snow Valley Mountain resort is a quiet family park great for learning to ski and snowboard. There are plenty of places for the kids to play in the snow and sun deck to lounge after a few runs. It does not have any lodging nearby so the resort does not get as crowded as Snow Summit and Bear Mountain. Snow Valley also has night skiing on weekends. Conditions of the snow can vary since it is on a lower elevation of the mountain. It is a great place to go if you just want to get your skiing and snowboarding in without the crowds and hassle with a lack of parking in the parking lot.

Drive Time: About an hour and a half from Orange County
