Moulton Ranch History

It all started when Lewis Moulton came to California from Boston in 1874 and founded Moulton Ranch by leasing Rancho Niguel. An avid cattle and sheep farmer, he leased the property for several years, before finally purchasing the land in 1895. Then he increased the land he owned to 22,000 acres. This land was then subdivided in 1960 and part of that division is the city we know today as Laguna Hills.

Ranching and agriculture are central to the identity of the Moulton family to this day. And in 2022, they opened the Moulton Museum to keep the history of Orange County and its ranching era alive. It has rotating exhibits that feature Lewis Moulton’s ranching legacy, Nellie Gail Moulton’s artwork, daily life, business culture, and local history. The museum actively archives, restores, and preserves Orange County historical artifacts from farm implements and buggies to documents, artwork, and images of the period.
