These are my go-to places when I want to ditch the screens, soak up some sunshine (or starlight), and really just breathe. It’s all about unplugging, roasting marshmallows, making memories, and maybe even spotting a squirrel or two doing something hilarious. Let’s be real—nature knows how to throw a good party, and these spots are total gems!

Table of Contents

Crystal Cove State Park – Laguna Beach, CA

This one’s a personal favorite in Orange County when I need a quick beach reset. The campsites at Moro Canyon are perched high on the bluff, offering up sweeping views of the sparkling Pacific. I’ve fallen asleep to the soothing sound of waves crashing below and woken up to a dreamy layer of fog drifting in from the ocean. It’s pure SoCal serenity, and honestly, it never gets old. Just a heads-up—make sure you plan ahead, because these reservations disappear fast!

Why I Love It:

  • The beach is just a short walk away—perfect for early morning tide pool strolls and salty air vibes

  • You’re close to amazing food and charm in Laguna Beach, but it still feels like you’re a million miles away from it all

  • Watching the sun melt into the ocean from your campsite? Absolutely unbeatable!

Crystal Cove State Park Cottages

If you’re into ocean views but not so much into pitching a tent, the Crystal Cove Beach Cottages are an absolute dream. These lovingly restored 1930s and ‘40s seaside rentals sit right on the sand and feel like stepping straight into a time capsule. Cozy, charming, and full of character, they’re hands-down one of the most unique and unforgettable places to stay on the Southern California coast (conveniently located close to the Pacific Coast Highway) .

Why I Love It:

  • You’re literally just steps from the ocean—sunset views from your porch are next-level magical

  • Each cottage has its own vibe, from rustic charm to breezy beachy chic

  • It’s like spending the night inside a living postcard—you’ll fall in love and definitely want to come back again (and again)

Heads Up: These cottages book up fast—sometimes six months out—so definitely plan ahead if you want to snag one!

Ronald W. Caspers Wilderness Park

If you’re craving true peace and quiet—not to mention some much-needed shade during those blazing summer afternoons—this spot is an absolute hidden gem. It’s one of those places that instantly slows you down. I love how spacious and spread out the campsites are, giving you plenty of room to relax without feeling cramped. Whether you’re hanging out in a hammock with a good book, roasting marshmallows around the fire, or just soaking in the fresh air, it’s the kind of place that makes you forget about emails, deadlines, and to-do lists. And yes—when the sun goes down, you can actually see the stars sparkle overhead. Total magic.

It’s a favorite of mine for mellow weekend escapes, especially if you’ve got little ones in tow or just want to reconnect with nature at a slower pace.

Why I Love It:

  • It’s an easy, no-stress drive from OC, but once you arrive, it feels like you’ve been transported miles away from any sign of city life

  • The trails here are peaceful and scenic—ideal for early morning strolls when the world is still quiet and the light is soft

  • You can hear owls hooting at night—yes, actual owls—which makes the whole experience feel extra special and a little bit magical

If you’re looking for calm, comfort, and a chance to hit reset, this place checks all the boxes.

O'Neill Regional Park – Trabuco Canyon, CA

This is my go-to spot when I need a last-minute camping fix but don’t have time to plan something big. It’s close enough for a spontaneous weekend escape, yet far enough to feel like you’ve actually gotten away. The campsites are comfy and easy to settle into, with just the right amount of tree cover to keep things cool and pleasant—especially during those hot summer months. Whether you’re coming solo, with friends, or bringing the whole crew, it’s a great mix of convenience and outdoor charm. And if you’re into biking, you’ll love the trail access—major bonus points for being super bike-friendly!

Why I Love It:

  • The bathrooms are actually clean (yep, I said it—and that alone is worth celebrating!)

  • The shady campsites offer a nice escape from the sun but still feel open, breezy, and inviting

  • You can pack up and be home in time for Sunday brunch, still feeling totally refreshed and recharged

When I want nature without the hassle, this place never disappoints. It’s simple, easy, and exactly what I need to hit pause and reset—even on short notice.

San Mateo Campground – San Clemente, CA

I love this one for its perfect location—you’re tucked far enough inland to enjoy peaceful, quiet nights under the stars, but still just a quick 15-minute walk from one of Southern California’s best surf breaks. It’s the ultimate combo of coastal access without the crowds. If you’re into beach camping but want to skip the chaos, this place is your sweet spot. Whether you’re catching waves, chilling by the fire, or strolling to the shore at sunrise, it’s got that laid-back, just-right vibe.

Why I Love It:

  • The trail to the beach makes for a stunning early morning walk—sunrise views, ocean breeze, and that peaceful start to your day

  • There’s a great mix of both tent and RV campers here, so it feels friendly and social, but never too loud or rowdy

  • Showers on-site (bless!)—because rinsing off after a salty beach day is the best kind of luxury

It’s that rare kind of campground that lets you enjoy the best of both worlds—cozy, quiet nights and easy beach access, all wrapped up in a relaxed, SoCal setting.

Idyllwild Park – Idyllwild, CA

When I’m ready to trade the palm trees for towering pine trees, this is my go-to getaway. Idyllwild has that charming, cozy mountain-town vibe that instantly makes you feel at home. The campground is nestled among lush trails and big, shady trees that create the perfect peaceful escape. I always make a ritual out of stopping in town first—for a hot coffee and a warm cinnamon roll—before heading into the woods to settle in.

Why I Love It:

  • Campfire nights here are truly next level, with stars so bright you can’t help but get lost in the sky

  • You’re just minutes from the quaint town, yet perfectly tucked away in nature’s embrace

  • That fresh, crisp mountain air hits different—it’s like a deep breath of pure calm and energy all at once

Idyllwild is the perfect spot when you want to switch up the scenery and soak in some serious mountain magic.

Mount San Jacinto State Park – Idyllwild, CA

This spot is a bit more rugged than Idyllwild Park, but that’s exactly why it’s worth the trip—the elevation and views here are absolutely breathtaking. I’ve tackled some of my favorite hikes in this area, including the unforgettable Devil’s Slide Trail, and every time I leave, I feel like I’ve truly experienced what real camping is all about. It’s raw, it’s wild, and it never disappoints.

Why I Love It:

  • It’s quiet and wild in the best way—perfect for unplugging and getting back to nature

  • The cool temperatures during summer feel like a refreshing escape from the heat down below

  • The hiking trails feel like stepping into a secret world, full of hidden beauty and peaceful solitude

If you’re looking for a more adventurous, no-frills camping experience with stunning scenery, this place is calling your name.

Dogwood Campground – Lake Arrowhead, CA

Dogwood is perfect for those times when I want to feel completely immersed in the forest but still enjoy a comfy, cozy home base. The campground is wonderfully shady and quiet, with just the right amount of space between campsites to keep things peaceful and relaxing. Plus, if you’re craving a little snack or a quick bite, Lake Arrowhead Village is only a short drive away—super convenient! Plenty of picnic tables for all!

Why I Love It:

  • The moment you pull in, you’re greeted by that incredible smell of pine trees and campfire—it instantly puts you in a nature state of mind

  • It’s an ideal spot for hanging hammocks and drifting off to those perfect afternoon naps

  • There are so many beautiful trails just minutes away, perfect for exploring and soaking up fresh forest air

Dogwood is that sweet spot where comfort meets the wild, making it a go-to whenever I want to escape but still feel at home.

Serrano Campground – Big Bear Lake, CA

This one feels just like summer camp—in the absolute best way possible. Nestled right on the shores of Big Bear Lake, it’s the perfect blend of peaceful nature and fun-filled activity. I love waking up early to kayak across the calm water and then winding down the day by roasting marshmallows around the campfire under a blanket of stars. Plus, the lake views from some of the campsites? Simply breathtaking. One of the best places to go for tent camping!

Why I Love It:

  • Water access here is unbeatable—you can practically dive right in from your site

  • It’s super close to town, so grabbing coffee, breakfast, or last-minute supplies is a breeze

  • The Alpine Pedal Path is perfect for a relaxed bike ride or a leisurely stroll, with stunning scenery all around
